Columbine, Aquilegia vulgaris, is a graceful late-Spring bloomer with pretty round leaves, and a tall spire-y shape. While it is a short-lived perennial (2-4 years usually), it self seeds easily, so from your mother plant you will gradually find numerous Columbine babies sprouting up in your garden. We like the way they find unlikely places to volunteer, they're not afraid of setting up on a steep hill or in a little crack in the pavement.
The Pink Petticoat Columbine is the sweetest shade of light rosey-pink, fading to white for an ombre effect, and the shape looks like a tiny bonnet. The full double-bloom is a unique change from the typical Columbine shape.
Planting conditions: Not picky about soil, plant this puppy anywhere.
Sun: Part-shade is ideal if you have hot Summers in particular, but can tolerate variety of sun exposures.
Blooms: Mid-Spring through early Summer.
Perennial: Columbine is a short-lived perennial that will come back each year in zones 3-9, but also spreads by self-seeding, so if the conditions are right it will continue to pop up around your garden longer than the 2-4 year life-span of the original plant.
Ships: Beginning in the Spring, in a 4.5" diameter pot.
