Hellebore is a surprising and sultry beauty that starts to bloom in the Winter, often during the Christian season of Lent before Easter, which is why its common name is Lenten Rose. We love the subtle coloring, and the downward-leaning blooms that give this plant a moody caste. The evergreen foliage is pretty enough to be welcome in the garden all year round, although the bloom period is quite extended for a Spring bloomer: the blooms open brighter, and then fade gradually into an increasingly subtle hue without wilting or looking spent. To see this beauty poking blooms up through the late Winter snow, none the worse for wear, is enough to make a believer out of anyone.
The Mother of the Bride is a gorgeous double 3" bloom with apricot petals lined with a light pink picotee edge.
Planting conditions: Likes regular water while blooming, and is happy in wet woodland areas, but is drought tolerant once established. Very easy to grow.
Sun: Part-shade is ideal, but can tolerate near full sun and near full shade.
Blooms: for 6 weeks in late Winter to very early Spring.
Perennial: Hellebores are perennial in zones 4-9, and will spread via it's root system if it's happy.
