Marigolds are used in sacred ceremonies the world round, from Day of the Dead alters to guide the spirits to their alters, to garlands offered to Ganesh in India, and in Catholic offerings to the Virgin Mary.
If their holy lineage isn't enough to encourage you to tuck a few of these plants into your garden, Marigolds are also delicious, you can eat the blossoms and the ferny foliage.
Cracker Jack Smiles Marigold we chose for the large 3-4" blooms are double ruffled, and because it makes a rich yellow dye.
Here's how to make the dye: put about 20 blooms (trim off the stems) in a big pot of water, and boil for about 10 minutes, until the water changes color. Now turn the heat down low to simmer and drop your cloth in (wool and silk work best, but cotton and linen are fine too) and mix it around occasionally until you reach your desired hue/saturation. Note that the color will look darker when it's wet. That's it! Rinse and wear.
Planting conditions: Full sun, are pretty drought tolerant but will bloom better with regular water, and are not picky about soil conditions.
Blooms: Blooms abundantly from summer through first hard frost. Deadhead the blooms regularly (meaning cut the flowers, or if the flowers die on the plant cut them off down to where to stem is green right above where it is leafing again) to encourage more blooms.
Annual, will not overwinter.
