Celosia, Celosia spicata, are sturdy and easy to grow, love the heat, and behave a bit like ornamental grass with their spire-like blooms and tendency to catch the afternoon light and make everything look magical. The flowers also make great dry flowers, simple hang them upside down someplace cool and dark after harvest.
The Flamingo Feather Celosia is a muted dusty pink that fades to blush as the blossom ages. The perfect addition to an understated garden palate.
Planting conditions: Not too picky, tolerant of a variety of soil types, and happiest in full sun.
Care: Once they are happy and established in your garden, they are drought-tolerant, but will bloom more with more water.
Blooms: All summer. Deadhead the blooms regularly (meaning cut the flowers for bouquets, or if the flowers die on the plant cut them off) to encourage more blooms.
Annuals, must be re-planted each year, but will self-seed in the garden if happy.
Zone 2-11, will survive winter in zone 10-11, annual in zone 2-9. They are very sensitive to cold, so don't plant outside until the ground has warmed in the Spring.
Can be grown in the garden, in a container outside, or kept as a short-lived houseplant.
Ships: as 3 plants in 2" diameter pots, in the Spring.
Growth habit: Bushy.
Size when mature: 2-3' tall and 2-3' wide.
