Call us old fashioned, but we adore Carnations, Dianthus caryophyllus. Their clove-like fragrance is gorgeous, and the petals are sweet and edible.
The deep burgundy is so dark this variety is called the 'King of Blacks' Carnation. It pairs brilliantly with pink, and we also love it in in an all-black garden.
Planting conditions: Carnations are easy to grow, but they definitely prefer full sun.
Blooms: All Summer. Deadhead the blooms regularly (meaning cut the flowers for bouquets, or if the flowers die on the plant cut them off down to where the stem is green right above where it is leafing again) to encourage more blooms.
Edible: The petals have a sweet and mildly spicy clove-like flavor. Simply pull the petals off and use as a fresh garnish or colorful addition to salads. Toxic to dogs.
Perennial: Carnations are short lived perennials in zones 4-9, lasting just a few years, and are often grown as annuals.
Zone 3-9. Can be grown in a container outside or indoors. Good cut flower.
